UK inflation has risen to 3.1%, with rising fuel, travel and energy costs putting renewed pressure on households and businesses.
The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that inflation increased from 2.9% in July to 3.1% in August.
While this is a long way below the peaks seen during the cost-of-living crisis, the latest figures highlight an important point for businesses: cost pressures can change quickly, and having the right connections around you can make a real difference.
Rising energy and fuel costs are putting pressure on businesses
One of the biggest contributors to the latest rise has been transport.
Motor fuel prices were 23% higher than a year earlier, with average petrol prices reaching 161.3p per litre in August.
Energy costs are another concern. Wholesale gas prices have been rising amid disruption to global energy supplies, while the domestic energy price cap is also set to increase.
For businesses, higher energy and fuel costs don’t simply affect the monthly bill. They can feed into transportation, manufacturing, deliveries, premises, staffing and the cost of goods and services.
That makes managing overheads increasingly important.

In uncertain times, your network matters
There is another lesson in the latest economic figures that goes beyond inflation.
When costs rise and businesses face greater uncertainty, strong relationships become even more valuable.
Networking isn’t simply about collecting business cards or looking for your next sale.
It’s about building a network of people you know, trust and can turn to when circumstances change.
That could mean:
- Finding a supplier who can offer better value.
- Being introduced to a specialist who can solve a problem.
- Sharing knowledge and experience with another business owner.
- Finding new customers through trusted recommendations.
- Discovering opportunities that you wouldn’t have found on your own.
- Having people around your business who understand the challenges you’re facing.
Loyalty can become a business advantage
When times are difficult, it’s tempting to focus entirely on cutting costs.
But sustainable businesses need more than cost-cutting.
They need strong relationships, reliable partners and a network that continues to create opportunities.
The businesses you support today may become the businesses that support you tomorrow.
The people you meet through networking may introduce you to your next customer, supplier, employee or strategic partner.
And the connections you build when business is going well can become particularly valuable when the economic environment becomes more challenging.
Build the connections that support your business
Nobody can control global oil prices, energy markets or inflation.
What businesses can control is how prepared they are to respond.
That means reviewing costs, looking for opportunities to work smarter and, perhaps most importantly, building a strong network around your business.
At Firefly Hub, we believe networking is about more than simply generating leads. It’s about creating genuine connections that can support businesses over the long term.
With economic uncertainty continuing, strengthening those relationships and building loyalty isn’t just good networking — it can be part of building a more sustainable business.
