There is certainly no shortage of business networking in London. On almost any day of the week, you can find breakfasts, lunches, evening events, conferences and informal meet-ups promising the opportunity to make new connections. The difficulty is not finding people to meet; it is finding the time and space to develop business relationships that actually lead somewhere.
In a city as large and busy as London, it is very easy to accumulate contacts without really getting to know anybody. You can attend an event, exchange LinkedIn details with twenty people and leave with a collection of new connections, but if none of those people properly understands your business, it is questionable how valuable those connections really are.
Firefly takes a different approach to London business networking. Our aim is not to put as many people as possible into a room. We want to bring the right people together regularly, in a relaxed and friendly environment where they have the opportunity to get to know one another and build relationships that can develop into genuine referrals.
Cutting Through the Noise of London Networking
London’s size is one of its greatest commercial advantages, but it can also make business development surprisingly impersonal. There are thousands of companies competing for attention and an endless stream of emails, LinkedIn messages, advertisements and invitations arriving every day.
Against that background, a genuine personal relationship stands out.
When somebody knows who you are, understands what your business does and trusts the way you work, you are no longer simply another company appearing in a search result or somebody sending an unsolicited message. You become a person they can confidently introduce when one of their customers, colleagues or contacts needs your particular service.
That is the type of connection we want to encourage at Firefly. It is not networking for the sake of filling an address book; it is about creating a manageable network of people who actually know one another.
Two London Meetings to Suit Different Working Days
One of the realities of networking in London is that the same meeting time will never suit everybody. A 7.30am start might be ideal for one business owner and completely impractical for another.
Firefly therefore has two London networking opportunities with very different timings: Barnet at 7.30am and London City, at Warren Street, at 11am.
The early Barnet meeting can work particularly well for tradespeople and business owners who are accustomed to starting their working day early. You can network first thing in the morning and still have the majority of the day available for customers, appointments and work.
For somebody working in a corporate or professional environment, a parent who has the school run to consider, or simply anybody who has no desire to be networking over breakfast at 7.30 in the morning, the 11am Warren Street meeting provides a very different option. It falls naturally into the late morning and around lunchtime, creating a more relaxed opportunity to network without requiring an exceptionally early start.
There is no ‘correct’ time to network. The best meeting is the one that fits realistically into your life and business, because that is the meeting you are much more likely to attend consistently.
Networking Should Fit Around Your Business
This matters more than it might initially appear. Networking only becomes genuinely useful when people have time to develop relationships, and that requires consistency. If attending a particular meeting involves reorganising your entire day every time it takes place, sooner or later it is likely to become something you stop doing.
London adds another complication because travelling relatively short distances can consume a surprising amount of time. A networking event might look perfect until you realise that reaching it during the morning rush hour requires several changes and turns a short meeting into half a day away from your business.
Choosing the right location and time is therefore an important part of choosing a networking group. Our Barnet and Warren Street meetings provide different options because the people we want within the Firefly community do not all have identical working lives.
A plumber starting early, a consultant travelling into central London, a company director with meetings throughout the afternoon and a parent running a business around family commitments may all benefit from networking, but there is no reason to expect them all to want to do it at the same time of day.
One Member Per Profession
London is competitive. Whatever your profession, there are likely to be hundreds or thousands of other businesses offering something similar, and large networking events can sometimes reproduce exactly the same problem on a smaller scale.
If several accountants, mortgage advisers, web developers or electricians are standing in the same room, everybody is competing for the same attention. When another member subsequently has an opportunity to make a referral, they then have to decide which of several people providing the same service they should recommend.
Firefly operates differently, with one member per profession within each hub.
This gives members the opportunity to become known within their group for what they do. If your profession is represented by you, the other members do not have to remember which of four similar businesses they spoke to. They know who their accountant is, who their solicitor is, who their plumber is and who their marketing specialist is.
It cuts through some of the noise and creates the space for much more meaningful referral relationships to develop.
You Don’t Need to Sell to Everybody in the Room
One of the misconceptions about business networking is that success means finding customers among the people attending the meeting. In reality, that is only a small part of its potential value.
The person sitting opposite you may never need your services personally, but they could know dozens of people who do. Their customers, colleagues, suppliers, friends and wider professional network all represent potential connections.
This is why getting to know people matters far more than trying to sell to them. If you understand another member’s business and they understand yours, you both become much better equipped to recognise opportunities for one another.
A conversation that produces absolutely no business today could result in an excellent introduction six months later. The relationship is what creates that possibility.
Relaxed and Friendly Does Not Mean Uncommercial
Business networking does not have to feel intimidating or excessively formal to generate serious commercial opportunities. In fact, people often communicate more openly when they are comfortable.
Firefly meetings are intended to be relaxed, welcoming and friendly, but there is still a clear business purpose behind them. Members are there to develop their networks, create opportunities and grow their businesses.
The difference is that we do not believe people need to be subjected to relentless sales pitches for that to happen.
When members see each other regularly, conversations naturally become more detailed. You learn which customers somebody works particularly well with, what sort of projects they want and where their expertise lies. That knowledge is what allows better-quality referrals to happen.
From a London Contact to a Genuine Business Relationship
There is a significant difference between having somebody’s contact details and having a relationship with them. London provides endless opportunities to achieve the former; good networking should help you achieve the latter.
A useful business contact is somebody you would feel comfortable telephoning when you need advice or making an introduction to when one of your customers needs their service. Equally, they should understand your business well enough to recognise when somebody within their network should be speaking to you.
That takes more than exchanging business cards. It develops through regular conversations, reliability and the experience of seeing how somebody conducts themselves professionally.
Once that trust exists, networking begins to produce something much more valuable than a long list of names.
Choose the London Networking Meeting That Works for You
If you are looking for business networking in London, you do not need another event where you rush around a crowded room trying to speak to as many people as possible. You need the opportunity to meet good businesses, get to know the people behind them and develop relationships that have the potential to become commercially valuable.
If an early start suits you, Firefly Barnet meets at 7.30am, allowing you to network before getting on with the rest of your working day. It can be an excellent option for trades, early starters and business owners who prefer to have their networking completed before the day gets busy.
If later works better, Firefly London City at Warren Street meets at 11am. It is particularly convenient for professionals, corporate businesses, parents and anyone who prefers a relaxed late-morning or lunchtime approach to networking.
Whichever time works for you, the principle remains the same: a friendly environment, one member per profession and an opportunity to make meaningful connections rather than simply adding more noise to an already very noisy city.
Come along to a Firefly London meeting and see which hub feels right for you.
